How long does a bathroom renovation really take?

Straight answer first: a proper full bathroom renovation — floor hacked up, waterproofing redone, everything reinstalled — takes 7 to 10 working days for one bathroom. A cosmetic refresh with no hacking takes 2 to 4 days. And a contractor who promises a full renovation done in 4 days is not faster than everyone else — he is skipping the curing and testing days that you cannot see in the finished photos, but will absolutely see in your downstairs ceiling two years later.
The day-by-day timeline
| Day | Work | Why it takes this long |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Protection and hacking — tiles and old screed off, debris carted out | The loudest day of the job. Tell your neighbours in advance; it buys a lot of goodwill |
| 2 | Plumbing rough-in — embedded pipes replaced, new points run | Every new joint gets pressure-tested before it is buried. Skipping this test is how leaks get sealed inside walls |
| 3 | New screed laid with a fall towards the floor trap | Screed must cure before anything goes on top of it |
| 4 | Waterproofing membrane, two coats, turned up the walls | The second coat only goes on after the first has set properly |
| 5 | Membrane cures, then the floor is flooded for the ponding test | Water sits for a full 24 hours |
| 6 | Ponding checked and drained; wall tiling starts | Downstairs ceiling inspected before a single tile goes down |
| 7 | Floor tiling | Cuts around the trap and falls need unhurried hands |
| 8 | Grouting and silicone | Only after the tile adhesive has cured — grouting same-day traps moisture |
| 9 | Fixtures in: bowl, basin, heater, accessories | Heater wiring is carried out with our licensed partner contractor, Suruhanjaya Tenaga compliant |
| 10 | Testing, touch-ups, handover | Every tap run, every joint checked, photos handed over — including the ponding test |
The two days where "nothing happens"
Days 4 to 6 are where impatient jobs go wrong, because to an untrained eye nothing is happening — no hacking, no tiling, just a wet floor sitting there. That wet floor is the 24-hour ponding test, and it is the only moment in the entire renovation when the waterproofing can be proven to work. Once tiles go on top, the membrane is buried for the next twenty years; there is no second chance to check it. We flood the floor, mark the water level, wait a full day, then inspect the ceiling below before draining. Curing cannot be cheated either — in the rainy season, humidity around Serdang slows drying noticeably, and pointing fans at it helps the surface but not the chemistry underneath.
What a 4-day quote is actually skipping
- Tiling over a membrane that has cured for hours instead of a day.
- No ponding test at all — the tiles go straight on.
- Reusing the old screed without correcting the falls, so water ponds at the door for the life of the bathroom.
- No pressure test on new pipework before it is buried.
None of these shortcuts shows in the handover photos. All of them show within a couple of years.
What can genuinely add days
- Hacking surprises. In 1990s terrace houses around Serdang and Seri Kembangan we regularly open a floor and find corroded galvanised pipe that was never meant to still be in service. It must be replaced while the floor is open — a day or two more now, versus hacking the new floor open later.
- Apartment management rules. Most managed blocks in Seri Kembangan limit noisy work to weekday office hours, so hacking alone can stretch across two days.
- Sanitary ware on back-order. Confirm your bowl, basin and heater are physically in stock before day 1, not after the old ones are in the skip.
Timeline versus budget
- Full renovation (hack, waterproof, retile, new fixtures): 7–10 working days, RM 8,000 – 22,000.
- Re-waterproofing only (same hack-membrane-pond-retile sequence, floor only): 4–6 days, RM 1,500 – 5,000.
- Cosmetic refresh (no hacking — fixtures, paint, regrout): 2–4 days, RM 3,000 – 8,000.
One more practical tip
If the bathroom being renovated is your only one, say so before the schedule is set. The sequence can be arranged so the toilet bowl stays connected overnight during the early days, and a good contractor will plan for that rather than leave your family queueing at the neighbour's. If you are still comparing quotes, our price guide shows what each tier honestly includes, and it is worth understanding how waterproofing works before you let anyone near your floor with a jackhammer.
