Weekend checklist: is your parents' bathroom safe? (12 things to check)

Set aside 15 minutes on your next weekend visit and run through the 12 checks below — most bathroom falls start with something on this list, and more than half of the fixes cost under RM 500. You don't need any tools: just your eyes, your hands, and permission to poke around your parents' bathroom while the kettle boils.

One thing worth knowing before you start: most older people who feel unsteady never say so. They quietly start gripping the towel rail, the basin edge or the door frame instead. So don't just look at the room — look for the worn, shiny spots where hands have been going.

The 12 checks

1. Pull the towel rail, hard. If it's within reach of the toilet or shower, it is already being used as a grab bar. A towel rail hangs on two small screws meant to carry a wet towel; a falling adult rips it out, plaster and all. If it wobbles now, it's overdue for a real bar.
2. Knock on the tiles where a grab bar would go. A hollow “tok-tok” sound means the render behind the tile has separated — anchors won't hold there and a fitter has to find a solid spot. A dull, solid knock is what you want. This one check decides whether a bar goes up in twenty minutes or needs rethinking.
3. Check which way the door opens. An inward-swinging door is the classic trap: someone collapses against it and blocks their own rescue. Note it down — reversing the swing or fitting a sliding door is a modest job compared with what it prevents.
4. Look at the kerb. That little step at the bathroom door is the most common trip point in older Serdang-belt terrace houses, and the glazed tiles usually capping it are close to the most slippery surface in the house when wet.
5. Run your palm over the wet floor. Glossy tile plus soap film behaves like ice. If the grout lines have worn smooth and the surface feels glassy under your hand, the floor is telling you something.
6. See how long the floor stays wet. Puddles still sitting an hour after a shower mean the slope to the drain is wrong — and a floor that's wet at 10pm is still wet for the 3am toilet trip.
7. Wiggle the toilet seat. Older people push down on the seat to stand up. Loose hinges shift sideways mid-push, exactly at the moment of maximum effort. A RM 10 hinge set, two minutes with a screwdriver.
8. Push the basin. Wall-hung basins used as a support loosen over the years. A basin that moves under your two hands is one hard lean away from tearing off the wall.
9. Press the water heater's test button. Every heater should cut out instantly when you press ELCB test. If nothing happens — or there's no test button at all — stop using it and have it checked. 10. Try the taps with a closed fist. If you can't work them without gripping and twisting, arthritic hands can't either. Lever-handle taps are a cheap swap.
11. Walk the night route. Bedroom to bathroom, lights off. Is the switch inside the dark bathroom? Is there anything to trip on along the way? A plug-in night light solves most of this for under RM 20.
12. Scan the floor at ankle height. Pails, water dippers, hoses left across the floor, shampoo bottles at floor level. Free to fix, and often the biggest hazard in the room.
