Bathroom floor trap draining slowly: hair, sludge and the smell that follows

Short answer: a bathroom floor trap that drains slowly is blocked within the first ten centimetres, right under the grille, by a mat of hair bound together with soap scum. Lift the grille, pull the mat out, and nine times out of ten it is fixed in five minutes with no tools. The smell that comes with it is the same problem, and it leaves once the trap flows again.
What is actually under that grille
Most bathrooms in Serdang-belt houses built after the late 1990s have a bottle-type floor trap: a square stainless or plastic frame, a grille on top, and underneath it a removable cup or basket that sits in the trap body and holds a few centimetres of water. That standing water is the seal that stops drain smell coming up. Hair settles on the rim of that cup and across the grille slots, soap and body oil glue it into felt, and the slots close one by one. Many owners mop over this grille for years without knowing the cup lifts out.
Older terraces in Seri Kembangan and Kajang often have no basket at all: the floor trap is a P-shaped bend cast into the slab, and a flat grille screwed over the opening. Hair goes straight into the bend and builds a sludge plug you cannot see.
Clear it yourself, in this order
- Lift the grille. Most just pull up; some have two small screws. Wear a glove.
- Pull out the hair mat around the rim and inside the cup. Lift the cup out, scrub it, and clear the opening beneath it with a bent wire.
- For the no-basket type, feed a barbed plastic drain strip (a few ringgit at any hardware shop) or a straightened hanger with a small hook into the bend, twist, and pull until it comes out clean.
- Flush with a bucket of hot tap water, not boiling, which can crack old PVC joints. If it swirls away fast, you are done.
- Put the cup back the right way up. A cup dropped in upside down or left out means no water seal and a bathroom that smells of drain within a day.
Why slow turns into smelly
The water seal in a healthy trap is replaced every time you shower. In a slow trap, water sits in the cup with the rotting hair and soap sludge, and that stagnant water is what you smell. Bleach hides it for an afternoon; clearing the blockage removes it. If the trap drains fast and still smells, the seal has probably dried out or the cup is missing, which is a different problem we have covered separately.
Baking soda, vinegar and chemical openers
Baking soda and vinegar fizz satisfyingly and move nothing; the reaction cannot dissolve hair. Caustic openers do dissolve hair, but they attack old PVC joints under the slab, and you will later put your hand into a trap full of caustic water. Pulling the mat out is safer, faster and free.
When it is not the trap
Open every floor trap and the kitchen sink in the house. If only one bathroom is slow, it is that trap. If every trap is slow at the same time, the toilet gurgles when the shower runs, or water rises out of one trap when another is used, the blockage is downstream in the external drain line. Look for the inspection chamber lid in the car porch or back yard; if that chamber is full to the top, the problem is beyond it, out towards the road. That is a genuine plumbing job with a snake or jetting.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Realistic fix |
|---|---|---|
| One trap slow, others fine | Hair and soap mat under the grille | DIY, no cost |
| Slow and smelly in one bathroom | Same blockage; stagnant water seal | DIY, smell leaves after clearing |
| Fast draining but smells | Dry seal or missing cup | Refill or replace cup, under RM 30 at hardware shops |
| No basket, still slow after wire | Hardened sludge deep in the cast-in bend | Plumber with snake, RM 100–500 range |
| All traps slow, gurgling, chamber full | External drain line blocked | Plumber with snake or jetting, RM 100–500 range |
| Trap body cracked, damp patch on the ceiling below | Broken trap leaking into the slab | Waterproofing repair, RM 1.5–5k |
The one trap problem that matters
Occasionally, usually during a renovation, a tiler cracks the trap body or seats it badly, and shower water finds its way into the slab around it instead of down the pipe. The giveaway is a floor trap that drains fine but a damp ring on the ceiling of the room below, or a patch of tiles around the trap that sounds hollow. That is a hole in your waterproofing at its weakest point, and patching the tile without fixing the trap and membrane just moves the damp. See the waterproofing section if that sounds like your bathroom.
Keep it clear with no effort
A cheap silicone hair catcher sitting over the grille stops most of this before it starts, and takes five seconds to empty. If you have done all of the above and the trap is still slow, or you have the cast-in type and the wire comes back clean while the water still sits, that is when it is worth a call; our price guide shows what a genuine drain clearance costs.
