Why does my house breaker keep tripping?

A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you one of three things: too many appliances on one circuit (overload), a damaged appliance or cable (short circuit), or current leaking to earth through moisture or worn insulation (earth leakage). You can usually narrow it down yourself, safely, in ten minutes — by noting which switch dropped and doing a simple unplug test — before deciding whether anyone needs to be called at all.

Which switch dropped? That is half the diagnosis

Open your distribution board and look. There is one larger switch with a small "Test" button — the ELCB (or RCCB) — and a row of smaller switches, the MCBs, one per circuit.

• The ELCB dropped: current is leaking to earth somewhere. This is the safety device doing exactly its job, and the usual suspects are wet ones — the water heater, an old fridge or washing machine, outdoor fittings after rain.
• One MCB dropped: that single circuit is overloaded or has a short. Whatever is plugged into it is the place to start.

One quirk we see constantly in older Serdang and Seri Kembangan houses: the whole house hangs off a single ELCB, so one leaking appliance blacks out everything and the owner assumes the "wiring is rosak". Often the wiring is fine — one appliance is the culprit, and the unplug test below finds it.

The 10-minute unplug test

1. Switch off and unplug every appliance on the affected circuit (or all of them, if the ELCB dropped). Switch off the water heater and aircon at their isolator switches too.
2. Reset the breaker. If it holds, the wiring itself is probably fine.
3. Plug appliances back in and switch them on one at a time, waiting a minute between each. The one that drops the breaker is your answer.
4. If the breaker trips instantly with everything unplugged and switched off — stop. That is a wiring fault, and it is not a DIY job.

If the trip only happens when several things run together — kettle, rice cooker and microwave on the same kitchen circuit is the classic in houses wired decades ago with far fewer circuits than modern kitchens need — that is overload, not a fault. Spread the load across sockets on different circuits, or have an additional circuit added properly.

Breaker trips when it rains?

This pattern is almost always earth leakage through an outdoor fitting: porch lights, garden sockets, the autogate motor, or the aircon outdoor unit. The junction boxes and rubber grommets on these perish quietly in our sun, and the first heavy evening downpour finds the gap. It feels random, but if you note the weather each time it trips, the pattern shows up fast — and it is a genuinely useful thing to tell whoever comes to fix it.

When it stops being a DIY matter

• The breaker trips instantly on reset with everything unplugged.
• Any burning smell, warm switch plates, buzzing or scorch marks around sockets.
• The same circuit trips repeatedly even after you have spread the load.

And two things never to do: do not hold or tape a breaker closed, and do not "upgrade" a breaker to a higher rating to stop the tripping — the breaker is sized to protect the cable in your wall, and a bigger breaker just lets the cable overheat instead. What a proper fix costs
