Bathroom lighting that survives steam: what to install above a shower

Sealed round LED ceiling light glowing on a white bathroom ceiling above a glass shower area in a Malaysian home, with light steam in the air

Short answer: directly over a shower you want a sealed, IP65-rated LED fitting; for the rest of the bathroom ceiling, IP44 is enough. An ordinary bedroom-style ceiling light in an enclosed bathroom will rust and start flickering within a year or two — and the wiring to put the right fitting in belongs to a licensed electrician, full stop. Here is how to choose, what it costs, and exactly where DIY has to stop.

Why ordinary lights die so fast above a shower

Every hot shower sends steam up to the ceiling, where it condenses on the coolest surface in the room — the metal body of the light fitting. The moisture gets inside, and it never fully dries out in a Malaysian bathroom that gets used every day. When we open up a failed bathroom light in a Seri Kembangan terrace house, the story is almost always the same: the brass contacts in the bulb holder have turned green, the steel spring clips are rusted, and the glass dome has a puddle of condensation sitting inside it — the dome everyone thinks protects the light is actually trapping the moisture in. The early warning signs are flickering that starts after hot showers and brown rust streaks creeping around the rim of the fitting.

Windowless bathrooms are the worst case. If yours has no window, pair the light upgrade with a proper exhaust fan — it protects the new fitting, the paint and the door all at once.

What the IP rating actually buys you

The IP number on the box is the only spec that matters for durability here. The second digit is water protection: IP44 means splash-proof, IP65 means sealed against jets and steam. Rough guide for a typical bathroom:

LocationMinimum ratingTypical fitting price
Directly above the showerIP65RM 30–80
Rest of the bathroom ceilingIP44RM 20–60
Outside the bathroom doorAny ordinary fittingRM 15+

These are sealed, integrated LED units — the gasket is the whole point. When one eventually fails you replace the unit, but at these prices and a typical 5–10 year life, that beats feeding corroded bulb holders a new bulb every few months.

Recessed downlight or surface dome?

  • Recessed LED downlight — the clean, flush look, but it needs a ceiling cavity to sit in. Fine under the plaster ceiling most terrace-house bathrooms have; impossible on a bare concrete soffit, which is what many older apartments and flats around Serdang and Balakong have.
  • Surface-mounted sealed dome — screws straight onto concrete, gasket under the cover, nothing to cut. The sensible default for apartment bathrooms and the easier retrofit everywhere else.

On colour: 4000K neutral white is the safe pick for bathrooms — bright enough to clean and shave by, without the blue operating-theatre feel of 6500K daylight tubes.

Where DIY stops: anything with wiring

Swapping a bulb like-for-like with the breaker off is fine. Everything beyond that — moving a light over the shower, adding a point, replacing a corroded fitting and its wiring — is electrical work in a wet area, and that is exactly where we draw the line for DIY. Water and electricity in the same square metre leave no margin for a guessed connection.

One trap worth knowing about: in older houses with a history of DIY wiring, the wall switch is sometimes wired on the neutral instead of the live — so the fitting stays live even when the switch is off. It is one of the most common nasty surprises we see, and it is why the rule is always to switch off at the breaker, not just at the wall, before touching any fitting.

All wiring work we arrange is carried out with our licensed partner contractor, Suruhanjaya Tenaga compliant. A bathroom light replacement or new point typically lands in the RM 80–600 electrical range depending on access and wiring condition — see our price guide, or send a photo of your fitting through our services page and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a five-minute bulb job or a rewiring one.
