Flickering lights at home: harmless or a warning sign?

Quick answer first: if it is one light flickering, the cause is almost always the bulb, the starter or the lamp holder — a few-ringgit fix you can usually do yourself. If lights in several rooms flicker together, or they dim every time the kettle, the iron or the air-cond compressor kicks in, that is a wiring or connection problem and deserves a proper check. The first kind is annoying. The second kind is the one we treat seriously.

One light flickering: run through these first

• Tighten the bulb. Switch off, let it cool, give it a gentle clockwise turn. A bulb that has worked itself slightly loose in the holder is the most common cause of all.
• Fluorescent tube blinking or slow to start? Nine times out of ten it is the little starter — the small cylinder at the edge of the fitting. It costs a couple of ringgit at any hardware shop and twists out and in by hand.
• Cheap LED bulbs flicker when their internal driver starts dying, and almost any LED will flicker on an old dimmer made for filament bulbs. Test with a known-good bulb before blaming the wiring.
• Bathroom and outdoor lights: damp corrodes the holder contacts. If bulbs only ever flicker in that one fitting, the holder is the suspect, not the bulbs.

If a brand-new bulb still flickers in the same fitting, the fault is in the holder or the switch. Replacing either is a small job, but it is live-wiring work — hand it over.

The flickers that are warning signs

• Lights in several rooms flicker at the same moment
• Lights dip noticeably every time a heavy appliance starts, and take a second to recover
• Some lights go brighter while others go dimmer — the classic sign of a loose neutral connection, which can also quietly cook your appliances. Treat this one as urgent.
• Buzzing, sizzling or crackling from a switch, a fitting or the DB box
• A switch plate that feels warm, brown scorch marks, or any burnt smell

Here is what we actually find behind these calls in older houses around Seri Kembangan, Serdang and Kajang. Wiring from the 80s and 90s relies on screw terminals, and thirty years of daily heating and cooling slowly works them loose. On top of that, most of these houses have been renovated at least once, and the extension's lights were often tapped off an original circuit with a twisted, taped joint hidden above the plaster ceiling. A loose joint flickers first, then it arcs and heats up. The flicker is the cheap warning; the heat is the expensive part.

What a proper check involves — and costs

A typical flickering-light call means opening the DB and re-tightening every termination, checking the suspect switches and holders, and tracing any renovation-era joints. Most of these jobs land between RM 80 and RM 600 — simple re-terminations at the bottom of that range, fault-tracing or replacing fittings at the top. Two things not to do

• Do not open the DB and tighten terminals yourself. The incoming side of the main switch stays live even when everything is switched off.
• Do not ignore brighten-and-dim flickering or any burnt smell to "see if it settles". Loose connections do not heal; they heat.
