Preparing the house before an elderly parent comes home from hospital

Single bed with fresh bedding and a walking frame beside it in a bright Malaysian terrace house room prepared for an elderly person's return home

If the ward has given you a discharge date, split your preparation into two lists: what must be ready before the car pulls up — call it the 48-hour list — and what should be done properly in the fortnight after. The 48-hour list is mostly buying, renting and one half-day of drilling. The two-week list involves cement and waterproofing, and trying to squeeze it into the discharge window is how rushed bathroom jobs end up leaking. This guide keeps the two apart.

Before anything else: talk to the ward physiotherapist or occupational therapist before discharge day, not after. Ask two questions — which side is stronger, and how will they transfer on and off the toilet? After a stroke, a grab bar goes on the strong side, and that detail decides which wall gets drilled. Ten minutes with the physio saves you mounting hardware in the wrong place.

The 48-hour list: ready before they're home

  • Grab bars beside the toilet and in the shower. A half-day job into solid wall, RM 250–500 for a properly anchored set of three. Book it for before discharge day — drilling into tiled walls is loud and dusty, and you don't want that happening around someone who's just home and exhausted.
  • A shower chair and a handheld shower on a rail. The chair is bought, not installed; the handheld shower is a small plumbing swap within the RM 100–500 range and turns standing showers into seated ones immediately.
  • A raised toilet seat or commode. Coming up from a standard low bowl is often the single hardest movement in early recovery. A clip-on raised seat is a cheap bridge until you decide whether permanent changes are needed.
  • Rent the big equipment, don't buy it. Hospital bed, wheelchair, walking frame — needs change fast in the first three months of recovery, and rental suppliers around the Klang Valley will swap items as they do. Buying a wheelchair in week one for a parent who's walking with a frame by week eight is money wasted.
  • Measure the bathroom door before renting a wheelchair. Many older terrace-house bathroom doors in the Serdang belt are around 70 cm clear — too narrow for a standard wheelchair. If it doesn't fit, a commode in the bedroom is the honest interim answer, not a door-widening job done in a panic.
  • Clear the route and light it. Move the bed downstairs if the bedroom is upstairs, lift loose rugs and cables off the walking path, and put plug-in night lights between bed and bathroom.

The two-week list: done properly, not fast

  • Converting a squat toilet to a sitting one. Common in older houses here, and genuinely worth doing — but the floor comes up, the waterproofing layer is disturbed and must be redone, and the new membrane needs a 24-hour ponding test before tiling. That timeline cannot be compressed honestly.
  • Removing the kerb for level entry, and non-slip flooring. Both change how the floor handles water, so slope and drainage get redone together. Refresh-level territory, RM 3,000–8,000.
  • A full bathroom rebuild (RM 8,000–22,000) is rarely needed for recovery — stage it later if the bathroom was due anyway.

A note on pace

Don't renovate for week-one condition. Recovery changes what's needed — the commode may be history in two months, while the grab bars stay useful for twenty years. Fit the permanent basics now, rent the temporary layer, and decide on bigger works once you can see how recovery is going. Our one-day basic safety package covers exactly the 48-hour list — see the elderly bathroom page for what's included, and our services for the smaller jobs. And if a date is bearing down on you and you're not sure what's realistic, ask — telling you what not to rush is part of the job.
