Widening a bathroom door for a wheelchair or walker: what it involves in a Malaysian terrace

Straight answer: a standard Malaysian bathroom door gives you a 70–75cm opening, and a wheelchair needs roughly 80–90cm of clear width to pass without scraping knuckles or door frames. But before anyone hacks a wall, three cheaper changes solve the problem in a lot of terrace houses: re-hanging the door to swing outward, fitting swing-clear hinges, or swapping the door for a sliding one. Full widening is genuine structural work — worth doing when needed, but only after the simple options are ruled out.
Measure the clear opening, not the door
The number that matters is the clear width with the door fully open: from the door stop on one side to the face of the open door leaf on the other. The open leaf and its hinges eat 4–5cm of the opening, which is why a “75cm door” often gives barely 70cm of usable width — and why a walker that passes the bedroom door suddenly jams at the bathroom. Measure the wheelchair at its widest point too (usually the rear wheels, or the user's hands on the push rims) rather than trusting the brochure width.
Three cheaper fixes to try first
- Swing the door outward. Re-hanging the door to open into the hallway frees floor space inside and removes the awkward reverse-out manoeuvre. It is also standard elderly-safety advice for a second reason: if someone falls against an inward-opening door, their body blocks the only way in. An outward swing is usually a half-day re-hang.
- Swing-clear (offset) hinges. These pivot the leaf completely out of the opening and claw back about 4cm of clear width — sometimes exactly the difference between stuck and through.
- A sliding or folding door. Takes the leaf out of the opening entirely, so nearly the full frame width becomes usable. For a wet bathroom choose an aluminium frame, and prefer a top-hung slider: a bottom track collects water and grime and becomes its own trip hazard, which defeats the point.
What real widening involves
When none of that is enough, the opening itself gets enlarged, and this is where an honest quote lists more than “tukar pintu”. In a terrace house most bathroom walls are not load-bearing, but every door opening still carries a lintel — widening means a new, longer lintel above the opening, not just knocking bricks sideways. Two things we check before quoting, because they decide the price. First, what lives in the wall beside the frame: the bathroom light and water-heater switches usually sit right there and need rerouting — that wiring portion is carried out by our licensed partner contractor, Suruhanjaya Tenaga compliant. Second, which side to widen toward: going toward the side without embedded pipes or switches is noticeably cheaper, and from outside the wall you cannot always tell — so a contractor who quotes a firm price without looking behind a switch plate is guessing.
After the structure comes the making-good: re-tiling the reveal on the bathroom side (if the house has no spare tiles left, plan a deliberate contrast border rather than chasing a discontinued tile), a new wider frame — aluminium for a wet area, since timber at a wet threshold rots from the bottom — and the threshold itself. If a wheelchair is passing the door, it still has to pass the kerb, so deal with the step or ramp in the same job, not as an afterthought.
Honest cost guide
| Option | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Re-hang door to swing outward | RM 150–350 |
| Swing-clear hinges fitted | RM 100–250 plus hinges |
| Aluminium sliding door replacing swing door | RM 600–1,500 |
| Widening the opening (lintel, frame, tiling, switch rerouting) | RM 1,800–3,500 |
The wiring portion of a widening job sits within the usual RM 80–600 electrical range; you can cross-check everything against our price guide.
Do it as one plan, not piecemeal
Door width is usually one line on a longer list — grab bars, anti-slip flooring, kerb removal, a seated shower. Doing them as one planned job costs less than four separate call-outs and, more importantly, the pieces end up working together: there is no point widening a door onto a floor that is still slippery. See how we bundle this in our elderly bathroom package — and if the need is urgent after a hospital discharge, say so, because the order of works changes.
