Adding power points at home or your shop: what's involved

Straight answer: adding one power point around Serdang, Seri Kembangan or Kajang typically costs RM 80 – 600. The spread is wide because the socket itself is the cheapest part of the job — what you are actually paying for is the cable run, how it is concealed, and whether the new point needs its own breaker at the distribution board.

What the price actually depends on

The load question nobody asks

A new socket does not create new capacity. It creates a new place to plug into capacity you already have. Here is the pattern we see constantly: a 1990s terrace kitchen in Serdang was wired with two or three sockets, because in 1995 a kitchen ran a kettle and a rice cooker. Thirty years later the same circuit is feeding a kettle, a microwave, an air fryer and a blender — and the breaker trips every time two of them run together. The house is not "rosak"; the breaker is just being honest about the load.

This is why a good installer asks what you plan to plug in before quoting. For anything that heats — water heater, oven, air fryer parked in one spot — the right answer is usually a dedicated circuit, even though tapping the nearest socket would be cheaper on the day. Tapping is how you end up with warm socket faceplates, and warm plastic is a warning, not a quirk.

Shophouse wiring: what we keep finding

Older shoplots around Seri Kembangan and Balakong deserve their own paragraph. Every tenant for the past twenty years has added a few points for their own business — the nasi campur stall's freezers, the phone shop's display lighting, the tuition centre's aircons — and almost nobody removed anything. Open the ceiling and you find joints twisted together under insulation tape with no junction box, 1.5 mm² cable feeding a whole bank of sockets, and an earth wire that goes nowhere.

So before adding points for serious equipment — espresso machines, freezers, ovens — the DB gets inspected first: are there spare ways, is there working earth-leakage protection, is the incoming supply even sized for what you plan to run? Sometimes the honest quote is "upgrade the DB first, then add your points", and a contractor who skips that conversation is not saving you money, just deferring the bill to whoever is holding the lease when something burns.

What you can safely do yourself

• Use a good SIRIM-approved extension cord plugged directly into a wall socket — as a tool, not as permanent wiring.
• Never daisy-chain extensions or run cords under carpets and mats.
• Open your DB and label which breaker feeds which room. Ten minutes' work, priceless in an emergency.
• Count what is plugged into each kitchen socket. If two heating appliances share one point, separate them today.
• If any socket is warm, discoloured or smells faintly of burning plastic, stop using it and get it checked — that one is not a someday job.
