Cracked or wobbly bathroom basin: repair, re-mount or replace?

Here is the short answer. Fine spider-web lines in the glaze — crazing — are cosmetic, and the basin can stay. A single crack you can catch a fingernail on, especially one running out from the taphole or the overflow slot, means the basin is structurally finished and should be replaced before it lets go. And a basin that rocks when you lean on it usually has nothing wrong with the basin at all: the wall fixings have loosened, and re-mounting is one of the cheapest jobs on this page.

Worth taking seriously, though. A standard ceramic basin weighs 10–15 kg, and when a loose one finally drops it takes the tap, the trap and sometimes a chunk of tile with it — not something you want happening at a child’s face height.

First: which kind of crack is it?

• Crazing: a network of hairline lines across the surface, common on basins from the 90s. Run a fingernail across — if it glides over without catching, it is only the glaze. Stains may build up in the lines, but the basin holds water fine.
• A structural crack: one distinct line, often darker because water and dirt have entered it. Your fingernail catches on it. These almost always start at the stress points — the taphole, the overflow, or the mounting holes — and they grow. No adhesive or epoxy repair on a basin holding warm soapy water lasts; replacement is the honest answer.

Not sure whether a crack goes through? Dry the basin, wipe some dark food colouring over the line, wait ten minutes and wipe it off. Colour left in the line means a real crack, not surface crazing.

Why wall-hung basins come loose

Nearly every wall-hung basin we re-mount around Serdang and Seri Kembangan has the same story behind it. The original installer drilled into a mortar joint instead of the brick, or used undersized plastic wall plugs — and after twenty years of people pressing down on the rim while brushing teeth, the plugs have spun loose in crumbling mortar. The silicone bead between basin and wall hides the movement for years, which is why owners are surprised how loose it really is once the silicone is cut.

The proper re-mount: cut the old silicone, lift the basin off, drill fresh holes into solid brick (not the same tired holes), fit proper heavy-duty plugs or chemical anchor for hollow or soft walls, refit with new bolts and re-silicone. Done right it sits at the bottom of a typical RM 100–500 plumbing visit and the basin never moves again.

If replacing: your three options

One installer’s detail worth knowing: more new basins are cracked on installation day than in their first ten years of use, almost always by overtightening the tap or the bottle-trap nut against the ceramic. Snug plus a quarter turn is the rule — another reason this is a poor job to rush.

Change the tap and bottle trap in the same visit

The basin has to come off the wall either way, so the marginal cost of renewing the parts behind it is small. Two we almost always suggest swapping at the same time:

• The tap — if it is older than the basin looks, its washers and threads are usually one disturbance away from dripping.
• The bottle trap and flexible hoses — old chrome-plated traps corrode from the inside, and braided hoses have a service life of about ten years. These fail quietly inside cabinets and cause the rotting-cabinet problem we see weekly.
