Kitchen sink smells even though it drains fine? The missing trap problem

Here is the answer straight away: if your kitchen sink drains perfectly but a sour drain smell creeps up at night, the sink almost certainly has no water trap. A huge number of Malaysian kitchens — especially terrace houses around Serdang, Seri Kembangan, Balakong and Kajang — drain through a bare hose that runs straight out through the wall into the outdoor drain. A trap holds a small plug of water that seals the pipe against smells; without one, your sink outlet is an open window onto the longkang. No blockage, nothing wrong with the drainage — just a missing RM 20 part.
The night timing is the giveaway. During the day you run water often, the kitchen is warm, doors are open. At night the air goes still, nobody refreshes the line for eight hours, and the heavier drain gas settles out of the hose into the cabinet and the kitchen. If the smell is worst first thing in the morning or when you come home after a few days away, stop suspecting a blockage — this is a trap problem.
Thirty-second check: do you actually have a trap?
Open the cabinet under the sink and look at the outlet pipe. A trap looks like either a plastic cylinder the size of a Milo tin hanging directly under the sink outlet (a bottle trap), or a U-shaped bend in rigid pipe. If all you see is a grey corrugated flexible hose snaking down and disappearing into a hole in the wall or floor — you have no trap. And no, the sag in the hose does not count. People assume the low loop holds water like a trap, but the loop shifts every time you bump it, holds an inconsistent puddle of greasy water, and the ribs let gas work past it anyway.
The corrugated hose is a problem on its own
Here is the part most articles skip, and the thing we see every week under kitchen sinks in this area: that ribbed flexible hose is itself a smell factory. Every rib is a tiny shelf, and kitchen waste water is full of oil. After a year or two the inside of the hose is coated in a layer of rancid grease — cut an old one open and you will never use one again. So even after you fit a trap, a smelly old corrugated hose downstream of it will keep the cabinet musty. The proper setup is a bottle trap at the sink outlet, then rigid 40 mm PVC pipe with a steady fall to the discharge point. Rigid pipe has smooth walls, holds no grease shelf, and lasts decades.
What the fix costs
| Fix | Rough cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bottle trap, DIY fit | RM 15–40 | Standard 40 mm sink outlet, hand-tightened |
| Rigid PVC to replace the hose | RM 10–30 in parts | Needs a hacksaw and PVC cement |
| Plumber does the whole run | RM 100–500 | Trap + rigid repipe + tidy wall exit, under an hour on site |
Fitting a bottle trap yourself
- Buy a 40 mm bottle trap from any hardware shop — bring a photo of your sink outlet so the staff match the thread.
- Unscrew the old hose from the sink outlet (usually a large plastic nut, hand-loose).
- Screw the trap onto the outlet with its rubber washer seated flat. Hand-tight is enough — a wrench cracks the plastic.
- Connect the trap outlet to the drain line, keeping a continuous downhill fall. No new sags, no uphill sections.
- Run water for a minute and check every joint with dry tissue.
While you are under there, follow the pipe to where it leaves the house. In many older terraces it simply pokes into the open perimeter drain outside. That is normal here, but if there is a wide gap around the pipe at the wall, seal it — that gap is the second-favourite entry point for smells and cockroaches.
If the smell survives the trap
A trap only guards its own pipe. If the smell continues after a proper trap and rigid pipe, the usual remaining suspects are a dry floor trap nearby (pour a jug of water into it weekly) or the outdoor drain itself ponding against the house. And if your sink outlet turns out to be a non-standard size, or there is no fall to work with, that is a quick job for us rather than a frustrating weekend for you — it sits comfortably in the RM 100–500 plumbing range in our price guide, and we can bundle it with other small jobs through our handyman service.
