Water heater keeps tripping the breaker? Causes and what to do

You're halfway through a shower, the water turns cold, and half the house goes dark. You reset the breaker, it holds for a day or two, then trips again — always when the heater is on. We get this call a lot from older houses in Seri Kembangan, Serdang and Kajang, where instant water heaters have quietly passed the ten-year mark.

First: the trip is protection, not the problem

The switch that keeps cutting out is almost certainly your ELCB or RCCB — a device that trips the moment electricity leaks somewhere it shouldn't, such as through water or through a person. A water heater that trips it repeatedly is telling you current is escaping to earth. That is exactly the situation the ELCB exists for, which leads to the one rule in this article that has no exceptions:

Never tape down, bypass or repeatedly force-reset a tripping ELCB, and never keep showering with a heater that trips. A heater with an earth leak and a disabled ELCB is how electric-shock fatalities in bathrooms happen. One trip after a lightning storm can be a fluke. A pattern of trips is a fault.

The usual causes, roughly in order

A corroded heating element. The most common cause by far. The element's protective casing wears through after years of heating, letting water contact the live element — a direct earth leak.
Moisture inside the unit. A slow internal drip or shower spray entering the casing wets the wiring terminals. Sometimes visible as drips or rust streaks under the unit.
A wiring or earth fault. Perished insulation on the heater circuit, or a poor earth connection — common in houses with 30-year-old original wiring.
A worn ELCB. These devices age too. A tired ELCB can trip at leakages far smaller than it should — but assume the heater is the cause until proven otherwise.
Water in the isolator switch. The heater's wall switch sits in a steamy room; condensation inside it can cause leakage trips.

What you can safely do yourself

Switch the heater's dedicated breaker off and leave it off — the rest of the house can be reset and used as normal
Confirm the pattern: if the ELCB only trips when the heater is switched on, you've found your culprit
Look (don't touch) for drips, rust streaks or scale under the heater unit
Press the ELCB's test button monthly — it should trip instantly; that's a healthy device

What you should not do: open the heater casing, replace the element yourself, or work on any wiring. The bottom line

A tripping water heater is your house's safety system doing its job. Isolate the heater circuit, use the rest of the house normally, and have the fault found properly — it's usually a same-day, few-hundred-ringgit fix, and it's not one to gamble on.
