Stiff or broken louvre (nako) windows: repair the clips or upgrade?

Nine times out of ten, a stiff or rattling louvre (nako) window is a RM 10–50 fix, not a window-replacement job. The mechanism is as simple as windows get: an aluminium channel on each side, small metal clips that grip every glass blade, and a lever that tilts them all at once. Each of those parts can be bought and swapped on its own. Upgrading to sliding or casement windows only makes sense when you want the room sealed for air-conditioning, or when the frame itself has corroded beyond saving. Here is how to tell which situation you have.
The three parts that actually fail
Louvre windows went into most of the older terrace houses around Serdang Lama, Seri Kembangan, Balakong and Kajang from the 70s through the 90s — usually in bathrooms, kitchens and along the back corridor. After a few decades, the same three things give out:
- The operating lever seizes. Years of repainting plus oxidation lock up the pivot rivets. People then force the lever, which bends the linkage bar — that is the point where a free fix becomes a paid one.
- The clips crack or lose their grip. The small clips holding each blade fatigue with age. Blades start rattling in the wind, and a badly worn clip can let a pane slide out and drop — a real hazard over a walkway.
- A glass blade cracks. The good news: nako blades are plain 4-inch strips of glass. Any neighbourhood glass shop cuts them to length while you wait for a few ringgit each.
Fixes most people can do themselves
A seized lever usually frees up without any new parts. Scrape the paint build-up off the pivot points with a blade, give the rivets a shot of silicone spray (not cooking oil — it goes gummy), and work the lever gently back and forth. If the linkage bar is bent from someone forcing it, straighten it slowly with pliers while the blades are open.
For a cracked blade, measure the old blade — or the channel-to-channel distance minus about 5 mm — and have the glass shop cut a replacement. One detail worth knowing before you pick it up: ask the shop to smooth or arris the cut edges. A freshly cut glass edge is razor sharp, and most people only find that out the painful way while sliding the new blade into its clips.
Replacement clips are sold in most hardware shops in the area for a few ringgit a set. Note that there are a few clip patterns; bring an old one along so you get a match.
When it is worth calling someone in
Call a handyman when the aluminium channel itself is bent, the frame screws have rusted solid into the wall, the window sits high over a stairwell, or you have a whole house of them to service. Doing ten windows of clips, blades and levers in one visit is far better value than fixing them one by one as they fail — this is exactly the kind of job we batch under our handyman service.
Honest cost guide
| Job | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| New glass blade from a glass shop (DIY) | RM 8–20 per blade |
| Replacement clips (DIY) | RM 5–15 per window |
| Handyman visit, servicing several windows | RM 100–250 |
| Replacing one complete louvre frame | RM 150–350 |
| Upgrading an opening to sliding/casement (incl. making good the plaster) | RM 600–1,500+ |
Repair or upgrade? The honest answer
If your worry is security, be aware that louvre blades can be flexed out of worn clips from outside — but the honest fix for that is a solid grille, which older terraces mostly already have, not a new window. If your worry is looks or dust, repair is still the better deal: a serviced nako window closes snugly and costs a fraction of a new frame.
Upgrading genuinely wins in two cases: a room you want to air-condition, since louvres leak air even when shut tight, and a frame that is corroded or bent beyond adjustment. For a bathroom, think twice before giving up nako altogether — that permanent trickle of ventilation is one reason older bathrooms grow less mould than sealed modern ones. If you are weighing it up, our price guide shows where window work sits among the small jobs we handle.
